PRIVATE JESUS DETECTOR : demo tape (self released, 1991)
Since punktapes.com is about bringing you your favorite tapes of days gone by, and preferable tapes, demos made by local bands, I’d say this one certainly applies for the job. Founded in ‘89, dis-banded in ‘93, here’s the original demo tape from my all time favorite Belgium band, PRIVATE JESUS DETECTOR.
As some of you might now, this tape got remastered & reissued about 3 years ago, on the 12″, called ‘the complete workz’
It documents all their previously released material & might be available thru your favorite distro..if not, feel free to drop me a line.
I’ve decided to rewind the whole remastering process by bringing you the ‘unpolished demo tape’ and their one and only 7″ how evil can one get?” which you’ll find on your favorite MP3 blog “7inchpunk.com” very soon! I believe the ‘PJD story’ (biography etc) has to come from a first hand source, thus I’m going to scan the 12″ insert while I’m at it. It’s packed with everything there’s too know about PJD & carefully compiled by the former bass player.
This demo tape came with a booklet (which I have but didn’t post). I’ve got no idea what it would mean in figures of extra bandwidth usage if I had done so but size does matter…
Final note : the first track, called “alcohol isn’t just a part of my life, it’s my life’” (see demo sleeve) and renamed as “intro” in the zip file holds the 2nd track ‘humanity is inhuman’ as well. It proved to be simply impossible to separate them without affecting the original recording.
To top it all off, I’ve added their MOB 47 ‘dom ljuger’ cover (which they didn’t include on the demo ’cause they felt it was a rather weak impression). As one of the band members told me, they did it just for the fun! Having said so, I still think it’s a real ripper!
Enjoy

LEGION OF PARASITES DEMO

DEMO 1984 (self released)

Legion of Parasites were a great thrash band from London, England circa the early 80’s. This was their first release. They went on to put out 3 solid 12′’s and a handful of comp apperances before calling it quits. Their earlier material (this demo and the 1st 12′’ “the undesirable guest”) is their most brutal stuff. Years later, some members went on to various UK bands such as SICK ON THE BUS. This band has always been a bit mysterious(at least to me) therefore I don’t have alot of info on em’. I’ve included a great song from the “Bullshit detector vol2″ lp on Crass records. This song was also on 2 or 3 other comps including “We don’t want you fucking war” on the famous Mortarhate recs. Go HERE for a discography.

M.E.L.I. (Muerte En La Industria)

m.e.l.i. demo cover

M.E.L.I.(Muerte En La Industria)- TU VIDA demo 1988

Scalding raw-punk from the bowels of the D.F.(Distrito Federal) in Mexico. These guys were relatively short lived (less than 2 years) and never released any material beside this tape. The 13 songs here, originally recorded for a radio show, became the rare last testament to a once great band. Although the recording is pretty rough, the bands conviction and honesty shine through and make one hell of a cassette.

The desperation and brutality most of these third-world punk bands experienced, along with the lack of finance and available resources make this stuff truly special. What it meant to look punk and be outspoken against the authorities in Mexico, Brasil, Peru or anywhere in S.America must be almost incomprehensible to the average spoiled American punk. Not to say it wasn’t hard everywhere(especially early on) but in these countries you might lose your life for your beliefs. I find it easy to overlook musical ability and recording quality when you know a band like this may have been in fear of their lives for having such strong convictions.

There is a CD discography that was put out recently and it contains this demo and a 14 song live recording from 1990. INFEZIONE

infezione demo cover

INFEZIONE-Oppressione quotidiana (self released) 1986

HOLY FUCK!!!!!! I present to you the BEST unknown Italian band ever. Somewhere between the time this tape came out and when every punky-cum-lately kid started to realize to true value and depth of CLASSIC Italiano h’core, these guys were completely forgotten.

In ‘85-’87, just when hardcore really started splintering into a thousand different sub-generes, most bands that played in the THRASH style went one of two ways. The first being “Cross-over”, a style that started strong but quickly adapted the sketchier elements of metal that sent it down the crapper faster than a warm turd (See: DRI, COC and any other band w/3 initials). The second, what I like to call “hyper-core”, was great hardcore with the intensity level turned up ” TO ELEVEN”. Bands like HERESY, L`ARM, S.O.B. and these guys (and later girl).

INFEZIONE played blistering thrash that was unmatched in the era by few others (except the above mentioned, maybe!). This tape was supposedly released in pretty low numbers (300-400 copies) and may be the reason these guys aren’t mentioned in the same breath as all the other Italian legends (but should be).

Back in the day, when I first got this tape (through a trade) I loved it so much and played it so often (10-15 times a day, whew!!) that I was afraid I would wear it out or break it. I made as many copies as I could, for my friends and all the different places I played it, like work, the car etc. to make sure I ALWAYS had a copy. Recently this got re-released on 12″ vinyl (AGIPUNK- Italy) and when I heard about it, I thought “great, I finally get to hear the CLEAN, original recordings and not some worbly old casette. When I got the 12″, I was so excited I could barely get it on the turntable. When the needle hit the records and that familiar scratchy, worbling sound of the tape came blasting out of my speakers, a small part of me was dissapointed. Yeah, they used the same cassette everyone else had, to make the record. I was mostly overjoyed though that someone had the good sense to re-release this back to the public and relieved I finally had something that I didn’t have to worry about wearing out or breaking ( I burned it to a cd-r). This tape STILL melts my face like the first time I heard it.

Check out a cool live video of these guys HERE

THRASH OR DIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

PS: These guys released 2 more records/12’s after this that are also great and worth tracking down.

LIP CREAM - Kill the IBM cassette 1985

Ahhhhh, the mighty LIP CREAM………………….FUCKING RIGHT!!!! (’nuff said)

ps: This isn’t the original cover (it’s from a boot) but cool none the less. I’ve never actually seen a proper cover for it and I’m not sure it had one. This is one of my most cherished tapes and LIP CREAM is my absolute favorite Japanese band. For some reason, this cassette is not as readily available as the rest of their releases. It was bootlegged 3-4 years ago in LP form with a bunch of extra (7″s and comp trax) stuff. All LIP CREAM releases rule and if you don’t dig em’, yer an EMO lovin’ sissy boy (or girl). Check HERE or HERE for more info.

Dead End - Youth Now Demo ‘84

Canadian hardcore outta Toronto. I downloaded this one awhile back off some guy that added this little blurb (which I thought was funny) to the whole package…
For those clueless that buy everything from good, nice, clean, corporate entities…

1: The Dead End “Youth Now” demo is sourced from a cassette tape.
2: The cassette is a quarter century old.
3: The songs were recorded on a 4 track Portastudio in someone’s shithouse back when people didn’t have indoor plumbing.
4: The amount of hiss that has developed since it was made is substantial.
5: All songs were dehissed (by my on a P2 350MHz machine), a process where music is removed leaving you with residual fuzz
6: All songs are 128Kbps MP3s - the kind most people dont download through MP3 4PpZ if they want QUALITY.
7: The MP3s sound ten times better than the cassette itself - Honest. I wouldn’t give them to you if they didn’t.
8: This was recorded in a weekend by the band, or more likely, a day. It’s raw, and flawed. You have been warned.
9: Yes, the left or right channels drop/fade out on occasions. Tape degradation and duplication anomalies are a recognized standard of excellence with cassette technology - that is why it has been superceded. And I wouldn’t be surprised if the band dubbed these tapes from a master tape using their home stereo systems - systems that, back then, were reknown for causing these left and right drops in signal strength.
10: I made these MP3s myself and likely, nobody else ever will since few copies of this demo likely exist any longer. Therefore, I ask you to take them all. If I die tomorrow, that will be the end of them, so please, DISTRIBUTE THEM, and pass along the files I give you here (The artwork/cover insert/m3u playlist/etc).

Charred Remains (Version Sound) ‘81

Great American/Canadian comp tape from ‘81, some heavy weight bands on this tape. Came with a 24 page booklet which contained information on all the bands appearing on the tape. My all time fav. track on this comp would have to be the opening number by Void.
Noise Records is now working on a second international hardcore compilation entitled “Meathouse.” It will be a double C60 cassette of up-and-coming bands from the U.S., Canada, and Europe. Contact Noise Records right away if your band wants to be on it. This is a great new label that deserves your support.

ATTITUDE ADJUSTMENT

DEAD SERIOUS TAPE COVER

ATTITUDE ADJUSTMENT-Dead Serious demo (self released) 1985

First (and only, I believe) demo by these bay area thrashers. They went on to release a GREAT record on pusmort called “American Paranoia”. Even more metal and rock crept into their sound (for the worse) and they ended up changing some members and shortend the name to just “ATTITUDE”. Around 1990, they changed members and the name again, this time calling themselves “TWO-BIT THIEF”. Although Eric Brecht (orig. DRI drummer) played the skins in this line-up, they ended up being mediocre metal. With each incarnation of the band, they got further away from the blazing thrash that made em’ a household name (at least in my house). If you like this demo, definitely check out the LP.
